Der alte gelenkspunktierer

1972

Dr. Joseph Lee Hollander '32 is named a Master by the American College of Physicians, one of innumerable recognitions he would receive over a 52-year career as a pioneering rheumatologist. He designed the first rheumatology boards and chaired the first committee for certification, and was a co-founder of the Arthritis Foundation.

A seminal researcher and beloved clinician, he served as Chief of Pediatric Rheumatology for 30 years at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, where an endowed chair in his name was established by grateful patients. He served a quarter century as Professor of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, and as editor for five editions of the magisterial reference Arthritis and Allied Conditions.

Internationally acclaimed, he was nicknamed "der alte gelenkspunktierer" — the old joint sticker — by international colleagues.
